Carlos Marquez, Architect, Chile
Do you think Augmented Reality technology could change the way/perspective we design?
Yes, there would be a big change in the design process. As the whole procedure of design did change since the introduction of computerised image in a very powerful 3D form, I think that already did (change the way we design). What this particular instrument does is actually facilitate the user to make a better understanding and what I meant the user is, when you design any piece of architecture. A designer, at many level have to deal with 2 dimensional problem such as plan, section, elevations and in their mind they keep building 3D image. But the clients don't understand the difference between an objective form of presentation (plans drawings) and the subjective form of presentation (perspective visuals), so this in my opinion has a huge impact on users because if the client wants to buy a building, they can have a kind of perception about what the implication of that building is. Also, team of experts like environment engineers or urban designers can have a better understanding about the 3D impact on the volume in the building form of the city. The main difference is making the process more transparent for everyone involved in the design process with a much more friendly scale and friendly use. Also, This kind of tool makes the process much more democratic and much more accessible.
What do you think AR can achieve in architecture and design?
I personally think this kind of tool should be available for the public for them to make comments over urban intervention in the city that affect their life. It shows what would happen on a ground level in a very real situation like a filming of future that is not there yet. And yes it's a really viable tool.
Do you think that AR could improves communication between designers and client?
Absolutely, in fact one of the problem you have as a designer is to understand on what your brain are thinking to do. However, when you can envision that in 3D before you even start to commit yourself to design, the technology change completely your idea about the project and how its going.
