What is Augmented Reality (AR)
Augmented reality is a kind of immersive multimedia that impose computer generated image to the user's environment. By providing composite view via tablet, phones and computers, the Augmented Reality creates a live view of physical environment which certain elements are supplemented by computer generated visual input. (Margaret Rouse, 2015) While Virtual Reality (VR) take over the real world and replace with a virtual environment, the Augmented Reality replace certain element in real world with virtual sensory elements. Different kinds of Augmented Reality implementation have been done. For instance, the AR technology has been applied in both combats and simulation trainings for the military industry. (Onvert.com)
What can AR do in terms of architecture?
As communication is merely important in design field, the AR technology is capable of advancing the communication method between the project staffs and also, between clients and designers. Although the Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) could help the audience in understanding to a certain extent, the AR technology could achieve further understanding by generating the digital 3D graphics instead of presenting by digital 2D graphics from a flat screen. (Jeff Yoders, 2014)
Hypothesis
Augmented Reality can change the dynamic of architectural design process.
Aims
In this research project, I will explore the relationship between Augmented Reality (AR) and architecture design, especially on how AR can improve the current design process, what can it achieve in architecture and design sector and how can it improve the communication between designer and people who involves in the design process. In order to achieve my aim, I would need to prove that AR technology is able to change the dynamic of architecture design in different ways. As AR is a rather innovative and new technology in the architectural sector, I intend to explore on what it has already achieved in not only architecture field, but also additional sectors and research on case studies to support my hypothesis.
Motivation
As I am relatively passionate on innovative technology, I have found Augmented Reality very interesting in terms of gaming and entertainment. As I came across with AR, I began to think that this technology could change the perception of design in future. Hence, I decided to further discover my speculation on this research project and by undergoing this research project, I would be able to get in touch with more information regarding to innovative technology which I am quite interest in.
Limitation
-
As the AR technology is relatively new in the industry, much of my research and findings are expected to be more on speculation and opinion based.
-
Also, the acknowledgement of AR among the public are expected to be insignificant as the technology are meant to be experimental and new to the people.
